The Bizarre Columbus Roadside Stop That’s Actually a World Record

Why are we so obsessed with large objects? Is it because they trigger our sense of wonder, or is it that we like to claim bragging rights? Or maybe, just maybe, we simply enjoy anything strange and extreme. Regardless of the reason, we can all agree that we love taking pictures of these whimsical objects. Some of us have even planned our road trips around these famous roadside attractions. Let’s be honest, many of the biggest sculptures are worth the detour. Ohio is no stranger to some of the largest things in the world. In fact, we are home to the world’s largest gavel. Why a gavel? I don’t know, perhaps to symbolize the power of the judicial system. But one thing is for sure: this roadside attraction in Columbus is worth a detour. 

So, if you find yourself on a spontaneous road trip through Ohio, be sure to make a pit stop in Columbus to snap a pic of the world’s largest gavel. At 31 feet long, Gavel, an enormous stainless steel installation, was sculpted in 2008 by artist Andrew F. Scott. An Ohio State University alumnus, Scott’s symbol of authority has been photographed by many folks passing through the area.     

Fun Fact: Gavels date back to medieval Europe, where the wooden hammers were used to gain attention or finalize decisions. So, it’s quite fitting that Gavel is sitting outside the Ohio Judicial Center along Front Street next to the Supreme Court building in downtown Columbus. The massive 7,000-pound sculpture is truly a sight to behold. Funded by a grant from the Ohio State Bar, it’s the largest and most expensive sculpture in the vicinity. 

So, why is the unique gavel a great pit stop on a road trip? Well, it’s easily accessible, it’s free, and it’s surrounded by beautiful scenery. The reflective pool and the Art Deco-style buildings make a wonderful backdrop for your Instagram images. You can also photograph the quirky roadside attraction from different angles. Plus, when you’re done snapping photos, you can tour the judicial buildings (on weekdays) or explore the attractions in the area.

The Scioto Mile Riverfront is just steps away, and with walking paths, green spaces, and breathtaking fountains, this urban oasis is worth a visit, too. About a mile away from the gavel, there is a hidden gem that I’d recommend adding to your stop. The Topiary Park is a quaint little garden featuring sculptures fashioned after characters from the famous 1884 Georges Seurat painting, A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte. Located next to the Columbus Metropolitan Library, it’s a great spot for a picnic and to snap some more pics as well. Moreover, there are museums and lots of incredible restaurants in downtown Columbus, so you won’t run out of things to do here.
