The Incredible Road Trip Through Ohio That Leads You To 6 Stunning Lakes

If you're of the opinion that lake life is the best life, then you'll absolutely want to read on. I've put together a road trip through Ohio that leads to six of the state's most stunning lakes. While the Buckeye State's frontage on Lake Erie generally steals the spotlight, living in Southwest Ohio, I'm partial to this region's lakes, creeks, and reservoirs; this trip itinerary reflects the beauteous bodies of water found around the southern hemisphere of the state. Grab the car snacks and camp gear, and get ready to experience some of the most incredible lakes in Ohio on this fun road trip.

1. Buckeye Lake

Charming and full of history (and fish!) Buckeye Lake is actually an old canal reservoir flows through Fairfield, Licking and Perry counties. After the canal era, the new parklands began drawing tourists from around central Ohio and Columbus, with this beautiful, 3,100-acre body of water perfect for all sorts of aquatic activities then -- and now!

2. Apple Valley Lake

I couldn't resist putting Apple Valley Lake on this water-centric road trip through Ohio. One of my favorite lakes (and places!) in Ohio, Apple Valley Lake is just plain perfect. This petite, 511-acre lake is a private lakefront community in Ohio that welcomes tourists, travelers, and families looking for a vacation or full time home. You can either stay at Apple Valley as a guest of the property owner or rent out a lovely home to experience lake living. If you don't have a connection to the lake, there are tons of amazing properties available on Airbnb, like this luxurious lakefront home.

3. Indian Lake

Tucked away in west-central Ohio, Indian Lake is a 5,000-acre lake that will take your breath away. Whether you enjoy boating, jet-skiing, camping, or simply strolling, you'll find there's a lot to appreciate about this beautiful lake in Ohio.

4. Caesar Creek

A treasure located in Southwest Ohio, Caesar Creek State Park and its eponymous lake are just waiting for you to explore and experience! The 3,741 lake is perfect for boating and fishing, and those looking to cool off can enjoy a dip in designated areas -- the park has its own 1,300 foot public beach.

5. Deer Creek

Located in the heart of Ohio's agricultural country, Deer Creek State Park is a beautiful expanse that really does have it all: forests and meadows, hiking trails galore, and the glorious Deer Creek. Known for some of the best fishing in Ohio, Deer Creek Lake is 1,277 glittering acres perfect for all sorts of summertime recreation. Bonus: Deer Creek State Park is home to one of my favorite state park lodges in Ohio, so if you're more a "glamper" than "camper," you'll feel right at home in one of the well-appointed, lakefront rooms. Growing up, I stayed at the Deer Creek State Park Lodge many times with my family, and it's one of my fondest childhood memories.

6. Lake Logan

While folks venture to Hocking Hills in search of caves and waterfalls, Lake Logan is another wonderful region to visit this region -- especially in the summer. Lake Logan State Park features one of the best places for Hocking Hills swimming and has lots of great spots to dip your toes while taking in the sublime scenery.

A great road trip is just as much about the journey as the destination, and I have to say, this adventure highlights some of the most stunning scenery in Ohio! View a full list of the Ohio lakes visited on this trip to customize your adventure, and enjoy!
