It often goes like this: the smaller the town, the better the pie. And boy is that true for Peru, New York, which is located in the northern part of the state and has a population of under 7,000 residents. It is also the home of Rulfs Orchard, which cranks out some of the best pie in the state. More than just food, the orchard is a great anchor for a day trip. And the charming small town of Peru can do the rest!
There is no question that Rulfs Orchard makes some of the best pie in northern New York. Their bakery opened up in 1987 and now produces over 10,000 pie crusts a year!
The bakery is open year round. We recommend picking up one of their signature apple pies, but they have a wide selection of baked goods on offer, including apple cider vinegar donuts and over 10 varieties of pies.
There is plenty to do on the grounds at Rolfs Orchard. There is a retail store, there is a farm and a greenhouse, and there is even is a petting zoo.
While you are in Peru, it's definitely worth checking out the Stone Ledge Sculpture Garden. It has a great variety of quirky sculptures on view, all made by local artists.
One major attraction in Peru—besides those great donuts of course–is the Adirondack Breathe Easy Salt Cave, which helps treat respiratory issues using ancient remedies—everything in the cave, other than the ceiling, is made using Himalayan salt.

Just a 10 minute drive away from Peru is the Ausable Chasm, an amazing sandstone gorge that has to be seen in person to be believed.
If you are looking to stay the night in the area, the Shamrock Inn is an affordable and cozy choice.
