The Catskill Mountains Scenic Byway is a 52-mile stretch of road that, for the most part, runs on New York State Route 28. It’s a beautiful, winding drive that lets visitors enjoy the best of the region from the comfort of their car, running through the hamlets, villages, and towns that define this charming area. For readers that choose to spend a day on this road—really, the views alone are worth it—we recommend making a stop in the small hamlet of Pine Hill. It’s one highlight of this scenic drive in the Catskills, and it is full of historic places and tiny town charm. For more information on Pine Hill, keep reading below.
Located in the western part of Shandaken, Pine Hill is a hamlet that has a population of under 300 people.
Pine Hill is the home of Morton Memorial Library, which was built in the early 20th century using the Georgian Revival style of architecture.
The hamlet is also home to the Shandaken Historical Museum, which is located in a former school building. It's now on the National Register of Historical Places.
If you need a place to cool off during your drive, stop by Pine Hill and take a dip at Belleayre Beach.
Another great destination is the Mill Street Stone Arch Bridge, which is also on the National Register of Historic Places.
Then there’s the Ulster House Hotel, which is one of the only hotel buildings representing the peak era of Catskill resorts still left standing. It too is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
While driving on the Catskill Mountain Scenic Byway, make sure to to stop by Pine Hill. It's a tiny town with a lot of charm. And, within the larger Catskills area, we recommend checking out Selena's, a cozy old-school diner that serves up really great food. Also, it's not wise to go into a road trip without being prepared. That's why we made this great road trip essentials packing list.
