New Paltz offers a variety of historic sites, outdoor activities, and unique dining experiences, making it a great weekend getaway.
When people think of weekend trips in New York, it’s only natural to consider the big cities first. After all, you could spend a month in New York City, Albany, or Buffalo and not see all there is to see. There’s a lot to see and do in our bigger cities. But you don’t want to ignore our small towns in New York, either! The town of New Paltz may not seem like much: with a population of less than 10,000, it certainly can’t compare to the urban sprawl of NYC or Rochester. There’s a surprising amount to see and do here, and it makes for a fantastic overnight or day trip in New York. Here are some suggestions to get you started for your next weekend getaway in New York to New Paltz:
1. Huguenot Street
Huguenot Street is a fascinating 10-acre historic district that tells the story of the region. Here, you can explore several museums and see recreated structures from the French Huguenot settlement that was in the area 300 years ago. 2. Mohonk Preserve
For other things to do in New Paltz, exploring the outdoors is a must. The Mohonk Preserve is a massive day-use and campground area in the Shawangunk Mountains. Here, you can enjoy hiking, biking, horseback riding, climbing, and more. This is such a beautiful place and a great option for exploring the outdoors!
3. Mohonk Mountain House: 1000 Mountain Rest Rd, New Paltz, NY 12561
If you want to stay somewhere filled with history, check out the Mohonk Mountain House. This resort hotel was built in 1869 and is a National Historic Landmark.

Get your day started off early at the Water Street Market. This adorable European-inspired village of shops has lots to check out, including a sculpture garden! You can find a list of shops on the market's website.
5. Garvan's Gastropub at New Paltz Golf Course: 215 Huguenot St, New Paltz, NY 12561
There are several restaurants to check out at the Water Street Market, but if you'd prefer to dine elsewhere, Garvan's Gastropub is a great option. This little spot is in a building that was constructed in 1759 and offers an eclectic menu. Reservations are encouraged, and more information can be found on the restaurant's website.
