A haunted road trip in New Hampshire visits some of the state's most haunted sites, from ghostly roads to eerie castles.
Who doesn’t love to be scared? Everyone loves feeling a bit spooked, and in New Hampshire, our rich history means that there are plenty of haunted places that will put you on edge. We’ve compiled a haunted road trip in New Hampshire that will take you to some of the Granite State's most haunted sites. Our trip begins on the Seacoast, and winds through the eastern part of the state, finishing in Concord, where you have easy access via interstates 93 and 89 to the rest of our beautiful state.

1. Island Path Road, Hampton
When the fog rolls in off the beach and the timing is just right, you may see the ghost of Goody Cole, the only woman convicted of witchcraft in New Hampshire.
2. The Isle of Shoals, Portsmouth
This rocky outcrop of islands was home to pirates, vandals and outlaws. Now, it is home to many ghosts and some truly scary places in New Hampshire. Beware the Boon Island Lighthouse ghost, and Betty Moody’s cave, where a mother smothered her infant while hiding from an Indian attack. You can still hear her cries.
3. The Mills, Dover
Years ago a fire destroyed many of the mills in Dover. Today, if you’re brave enough to enter the reconstructed mills, you may hear the sound of machines turning on and off, and see mysterious bursts of light.
4. Bow Lake, Strafford
It looks beautiful, but residents report daylight in the dead of night, and otherworldly screams coming from Bow Lake and the surrounding woods.
5. Town Hall, Alton
The town hall in Alton has long been the site of mysterious occurrences, including furniture moving on its own, heavy footsteps, and other-worldly voices.
6. Kimball Castle, Gilford
This place just looks haunted (although the view is beautiful). Groundskeepers have reported heavy doors moving without cause, and lights turning on in Mrs. Kimball’s sewing room.
Note: Kimball Castle is located on private property and is not open to the public. Please respect the owner’s privacy, obey posted trespassing warnings, and appreciate this location through your screen rather than in person.
7. Colonial Theater, Laconia
Visitors and employees report hearing spooky sounds and feeling uneasy in the theater.
8, Old State Mental Hospital, Concord
Parts of this facility still provide treatment to current patients, but it’s rumored that parts of the campus are haunted by patients from long ago.
9. Margarita’s Mexican Restaurant, Concord
This restaurant used to be a jail, and it’s widely reported that your tacos and margaritas may come with a side of spookiness!
