The Breathtaking Scenic Drive Through New Hampshire That Runs Along The Seacoast

New Hampshire doesn't have the longest shoreline in the United States — in fact, it has the shortest of all the U.S. states at only 18 miles — but there's a lot of beauty packed into that short distance. New Hampshire State Route 1A hugs the coast for the most part, providing access to beaches and several state parks, and it's a short New Hampshire scenic drive that can easily be done in a day.

This short but scenic drive is about 15 miles and should take about a half hour of driving time without any stops. In the summertime, expect the pace to be slower.

Sometimes, I like to get up super early for a good sunrise. If this is also true for you, start this drive at dawn by watching the sun come up from Seabrook Beach.

The drive passes through the popular summer tourist destination of Hampton Beach. During the summer, you definitely won't be alone here!

Rye Harbor State Park is a good place for a rest stop and to take in the sights and smells of the ocean.

Odiorne State Park is one of my favorite spots along this drive. Paths wind along the shoreline, providing rocky seascape views.

Visit history by stopping at Portsmouth Harbor Light in New Castle. A light station has been guiding ships from this location since 1771.

This road trip ends at the picturesque Prescott Park in Portsmouth, a public park spanning 10 acres along the Piscataqua River.

Since this road trip is relatively short, there's still plenty of time left over to explore downtown Portsmouth and its many shops and restaurants!

While rambling along on this New Hampshire scenic drive, you'll likely want to stop and dip your toes in the ocean, so pack your beach stuff! Be sure to also take a break for a bite of fine seafood from some of the best restaurants on the seacoast.
