The best downtowns in New Hampshire are oftentimes found in its small towns. So, exploring the heart of New Hampshire requires getting out and seeing some of the of-the-beaten path spots that you might otherwise skip. But, it can also mean checking out the cities that you only visit when friends are in town or you have a dinner reservation or tickets to an attraction. But we think seeing these places on a slow weekend day allows you to feel just how special they are. The downtown areas here are often thriving and when we slow down to enjoy them we gain a new love of the state. The ones included here are some of our favorites.
1. Plymouth, Grafton County
Plymouth is home to Plymouth State University, but it's so much more than just a college town. There's a lovely downtown area to explore, complete with small restaurants and even a local theater. When you visit, be sure to explore this secret waterfall.
2. Littleton, Grafton County
One of the most classic New Hampshire towns on this list, Littleton is a great little place to explore on a weekend afternoon. With a central gazebo organizing the area, there are also quite a few cute photo ops. Be sure to make your way to the Riverwalk Covered Bridge to see the Ammonoosuc River views. 3. Portsmouth, Rockingham County
We know, we know. Portsmouth isn't exactly a small town, but when you compare it to main cities in other state this beauty is adorable. We love it for the small shops and restaurants, along with the history that comes with being a waterfront town. Check it out on a day when you have the time to walk through the streets popping into local businesses along the way. 4. Meredith, Belknap County
Meredith is located in the heart of the Lakes Region and offers great views along with a fun downtown area. In warmer months you can enjoy some time at the local lakes, but be sure to plan for some adventures of a different sort checking out the local restaurants and shops. 5. Keene, Cheshire County

6. Hanover, Grafton County
Another college town means another great spot with a lively downtown area. The main street here actually goes right through campus, which is a great way to feel young again! And, as an added bonus to make things more interesting, the Appalachian Trail crosses through downtown so there's a good chance you'll run into some weary travelers nearing the end of a long journey. 7. Durham, Strafford County
Seems like New Hampshire is full of college towns and we're okay with that! Durham is home to the main campus of the University of New Hampshire and it offers fun shops, restaurants and even some cool gear shops to show your local pride.
