Located in Lyon County, Dayton came to be after Abner Blackburn discovered a gold nugget in a tributary of the Carson River in 1849. The town served as a commercial hub for miners and had a peak population of around 2,500 people. However, the turn of the century marked a downtown for Dayton, as the economy and population began to shrink.
Residents began to move away but the construction of the Lincoln Highway in the 1920s reinvigorated interest in the community. Today, Dayton is a well-known stop on the Loneliest Road in America, a.k.a. Nevada's U.S. Route 50.
While small, there are plenty of things to do in Dayton, NV today. Those who visit Old Dayton today can stroll its boardwalk-lined streets and experience a glimpse of the past. Dayton's historic downtown is home to several fascinating places, like the second oldest schoolhouse in the state, the oldest maintained cemetery in the state, and a small museum loaded with artifacts from Dayton's gold mining days.
It's easy to feel like the Wild West is still alive in a place like Dayton, especially since you can still hop aboard the Virginia & Truckee Railroad for a quick trip up to Virginia City! So much has changed, yet so much has stayed the same.
