Founded in 1905, Rhyolite is one of Nevada's largest ghost towns. A former mining camp for the Montgomery Shoshone Mine, it was once a thriving area with somewhere between 3,500 and 5,000 people. The town had two schools, a train station, and even electricity, but in 1909 the mines ran dry and by 1920 the population was almost zero.
Rhyolite’s ruins include the Bottle House (above), built in 1906 with around 50,000 bottles thrown away by the saloon, the railroad depot, school, and jail. Just south of the town are the Rhyolite-Bullfrog cemetery and the Goldwell Open Air Museum. Next up on your Nevada abandoned places road trip is the ghost town of Bonnie Claire. A former milling center for nearby mines, Bonnie Claire experienced a few ups and downs between the 1880s and 1954. The infamous, unfinished Scotty’s Castle was built 20 miles from the town (in California), and all materials used to build it passed through Bonnie Claire’s railroad station during the mid-1920s. Today, all that’s left of Bonnie Claire is the ruins of the mill, the mine, and several stone buildings.
First settled by ranchers and miners during the 1880s, Gold Point picked up steam when silver was struck in the early 1900s. The population soared to more than 1,000 people but before 1910, most residents moved away. In 1927, however, gold was found and the town again saw success, until government orders shut down operations due to World War II. After the war, mining continued but an accident at the Dunfee Shaft shuttered the mine.
The town is now home to less than 10 people, but it’s a hotbed of activity (though you may not see it). Preserved and restored, there is a standing main street, a saloon, and a bed and breakfast. Visitors can tour the mine for a price and rent town cabins for the night. The town is also available for special events and tours.
If you so choose, you can spend the night in Gold Point or your next stop, Goldfield.
The living ghost town of Goldfield is a former boomtown. In fact, it was one of the most prominent towns in Nevada during the early 1900s with all the amenities of a large city. Though much of the city was destroyed by a fire in the 1920s, there are several remaining properties in Goldfield including the Charles S. Sprague House and the Rectory building of the First Methodist Episcopal Church.
Supposedly haunted, the Goldfield Hotel is a four-story hotel built between 1907 and 1908. It operated into the '40s and was one of the most prominent buildings in Goldfield. A self-guided walking tour is available.

At the southern end of Goldfield is the International Car Forest of the Last Church, a bizarre roadside attraction featuring spray-painted vehicles nose-diving into the sand as well as in other interesting configurations.
With a population of about 700, Blair was established in 1906 by The Pittsburg Silver Peak Gold Mining Company. The town housed a mill, cyanide tanks, and a small railroad as well as a post office, saloons, a newspaper, and a hotel. A decade later in 1916, the town was completely dead. Here you will see mill ruins, old building foundations, and abandoned old cars.

Coaldale is an eerie 20th-century ghost town in Nevada comprised of fire-scorched, mid-century buildings crumbling in the hot desert sun. Definitely one of the creepiest abandoned places in Nevada, just a few of the strange things you'll see here include a motel, a restaurant and bar, and lots of evidence of a more modern existence like stove tops, a refrigerator, a television, mattresses, and a lawn mower.
The EPA discovered a leak in the gas tanks beneath the service station in 1993. The station went out of business followed by the restaurant. The town quickly dwindled from there. Today it's a modern-day ghost town.
"The Town That Refused To Die," Ione was on its way to becoming a boomtown after silver was discovered in 1863. The town sprung up as a trade and milling center and had more than 100 buildings by 1864. It was even the county seat. As gold strikes elsewhere drew people away, Ione's population declined. There were some other ups and downs, but the post office's closure in 1959 was the final nail in the coffin.

Your next stop, Tonopah, is not abandoned. Far from it. It's a thriving community with a handful or so of cool attractions. Among those is the abandoned Old Tonopah Cemetery:
Located next to the infamous Clown Motel, the Old Tonopah Cemetery (1901-1911) is believed to be haunted (though it is not considered the most haunted place in Tonopah). Some of Tonopah's pioneering citizens are buried here, including several who died from the mysterious "Tonopah Plague" of 1902.
Tonopah has plenty of services including gas, food, and lodging.

Listed in the National Register of Historic Places, Belmont was a major boomtown during the 1870s, but it didn't boom for long. The town had four stores, two saloons, five restaurants, a stable, a post office, a bank, a school, two newspapers, a telegraph office, and more. It was practically dead by 1905.
The Belmont Courthouse is one of the most prominent remaining structures in Belmont. Other buildings still standing include the Cosmopolitan Saloon, the Monitor-Belmont Mill, and the Belmont Courier Newspaper office.

However, very few of them leave the confines of the city to head out into the absolutely beautiful and truly breathtaking natural areas that surround it. This road trip will allow you to do just that, though, and you'll be amazed by what you see.
This road trip is short as distance and driving time goes. It's only about 300 miles and it would only take you 6 hours to drive it all if you just drove through and didn't make any of the stops. 1. Corn Creek Visitor Center - Desert National Wildlife Refuge
Depart your departure point fairly early in the morning, if you can. It'll be cooler and that way you can hopefully avoid any traffic. Your first stop will be at the Corn Creek Visitor Center at the Desert National Wildlife Refuge. This is the largest national wildlife refuge outside of Alaska and covers 1.6 million acres. The main objective of this refuge is protecting the habitat of desert bighorn sheep. The rangers at the visitor center will be on hand to answer your questions and tell you about hikes and drives around the refuge. There's a great deal of wildlife and native Nevada plants all over this beautiful place.
After you're done at the Desert National Wildlife Refuge, you'll drive 45 minutes to Mount Charleston. This mountain is part of the Spring Mountains National Recreation Area. The peak itself is 11,918 feet and it's the eighth highest mountain in the state. The area around it is quite elevated too, and you'll find this place to be a cool respite from the desert heat. Stop by the visitor center, take a hike, have a picnic lunch, or just take in the views. This natural area is vastly different from all the others you'll visit on this road trip.
Just a 50 minutes away from Mount Charleston, you'll find an entirely different landscape at Red Rock Canyon. This is one of the most popular scenic excursions for people visiting Las Vegas, so it's unlikely you'll be alone here, but its beauty is worth dealing with some crowds. Take the 13-mile, one-way, scenic drive through this park and get ready to take lots of photos.
Your next stop on this road trip is at nearby Spring Mountain Ranch State Park. This 538-acre state park was the site of the first working ranch in the Las Vegas area and was also later a retreat for millionaire Howard Hughes. Check out a living history program to learn about Nevada ranch life in the 1860s, walk the trails, or enjoy some birdwatching during your time here.
Your last stop for day one is about 40 minutes away - you'll love watching the sunset at Sloan Canyon Conservation Area in Henderson. This spot is home to a vast number of Native American petroglyphs; over 300 rock art panels have been found on site with over 1,700 different images included. Unfortunately, their locations are not publicized due to recent problems with vandalism. Consider taking a hike on one of the park's trails and see if you can find them yourself. Then, get a room in Henderson or head back to Vegas for the night to rest up for tomorrow's adventures!
Start your day with a swim! The first stop on day two of this road trip is Boulder Beach in Boulder City. You may be many miles fom an ocean, but that doesn't mean you can't enjoy a few hours swimming and sunning at the beach on Lake Mead. It's a little rocky so you'll want to bring water shoes and don't forget your sunscreen, too!
From Boulder Beach, you'll head north about an hour and a half to Valley of Fire State Park. Like Red Rock Canyon, this state park is popular with Las Vegas locals and visitors, so you'll probably encounter quite a few other people here. However, this place is so gorgeous that you probably won't even notice them! This 46,000-acre state park is full of unique and spectacular sandstone formations that will blow you away. Plan to spend quite a bit of time here exploring by car and on foot.
Another 40-minute drive and you'll have reached the final stop on this road trip. Warm Springs Natural Area is not like anywhere else on this list so far. It's a 1,250-acre oasis full of bubbling springs, streams, and lush vegetation. You'll never believe this green and woodsy place is in Nevada, so close to so much desert! You'll love walking the 2/3-mile trail and looking out for birds - over 200 different species have been spotted here.
Your final drive on this trip is about an hour back to Las Vegas. This will give you plenty of time to reflect upon all the amazing and beautiful natural things you saw on this road trip! Springtime in Nevada is unbelievably beautiful- especially in the desert regions. This road trip will take nearly 11 hours to complete, so feel free to make any adjustments to the itinerary you see fit. You’ll begin at The Valley of Fire State Park, which offers some incredible blooms that are especially striking with the rocky landscape as the backdrop. You’ll then drive to Clark County Wetlands Park, which features gorgeous wildflowers and attracts hikers and visitors from all over. You’ll then drive through the Mount Rose Scenic Drive in Reno, which features amazing views throughout. Then, stroll along the Truckee River at Reno’s Riverwalk- this is a great place to grab a hot drink and see the changing leaves. You’ll then head to Bowers Mansion Regional Park, which is a historical site that’s home to some beautiful changing trees during this time of year. You’ll then make a stop in the small town of Dayton before heading to Elko County, which is home to the Lamoille Canyon Scenic Drive. The region features gorgeous foliage in the Fall.
