Undoubtedly, it doesn't get any better than life in the Last Best Place. Montana has some amazing, nationally-known treasures like Glacier National Park and Bighorn Canyon. But, those of us who live here also know that the hidden gems in Montana are what really make the state shine.
Though it's easy to see beautiful scenery just about anywhere in the state, this road trip highlights some things to do in Montana that oftentimes get overlooked. Surprisingly, even by lifelong Montanans! As you make your trip plans feel free to reverse the order or even add additional destinations to custom-tailor the journey. Then, enjoy!
1. Kootenai Falls
Kootenai Falls isn't exactly a secret spot, but due to its remote location, it's something some Montanans never get to experience. Therefore, it deserves its spot as the first stop on your trip to see the best hidden gems in Montana. Not only is the waterfall itself gorgeous, but the short walk to reach it is breathtaking. Especially when you see the iconic suspension bridge that leads directly over the river. Though you may already be familiar with this waterfall, we love that every visit offers new views.
2. Thompson Chain of Lakes State Park
While some people have never even heard of this state park, it's actually quite expansive. Impressively, the park spans 3,000 acres and stretches over 20 miles along Highway 2, halfway between Libby and Kalispell. Most visitors use it for boating, camping, swimming, and water skiing, but it also makes a great spot to simply stop and stretch your legs. While we love this beautiful area, it's not our only spectacular state park. We have tons!
3. Grant-Kohrs Ranch National Historic Site
Grant-Kohrs Ranch National Historic Site pays homage to the American West and the hard-working cowboy. These are two things that Montana is undeniably known for. The site is open all year with the exception of some holidays. Be sure to read up on the how to visitbefore making your plans.
4. Alberton Gorge
Known mainly as Montana's premier whitewater rafting location, the Alberton Gorge is located mere minutes from Missoula on the Clark Fork River. This is a beautiful local spot that even most Montanans don't know about.
5. Redsun Labyrinth
Victor, Montana is home to one of the largest walking meditation labyrinths in the United States. Enjoy the peace and serenity, reflect on all the beauty you've seen on your road trip, and pick a stone to leave in the pattern.
These hidden gems in Montana are undeniably worth the time it takes to see them. But, of course, we know our readers have their own favorites. We're specifically interested in what you might add to this trip. Let us know in the comments so we can check them out, too!
