With all due respect to TLC, we happen to think chasing waterfalls is a worthy pastime. That being said, some of Montana's most beautiful waterfalls near me are located at the end of some pretty hefty hiking trails. Luckily, that's not the case for the iconic Kootenai Falls. To reach Kootenai Falls, all it takes is a short detour on your way to Libby and a short, exhilarating walk over a suspension bridge.
Kootenai Falls in Montana is not only beautiful, but it's also quite impressive.
This happens to be the largest undammed waterfall in Montana, and it's also one of the largest waterfalls in the United States if you go by flow rate.
While out-of-state tourists tend to flock to our well-known spots like Glacier National Park, this area remains a beloved local favorite.
This is a major attraction for anyone passing through the area, and for very good reason.
To reach the waterfall, you'll simply park in the designated parking lot off Highway 2 and follow the signs.
Before you know it, you'll be at the Swinging Bridge.
The Kootenai Falls Swinging Bridge crosses the Kootenai River just downstream of Kootenai Falls.
The original footbridge was destroyed during a flood in 1948, but the replacement bridge was built on concrete piers to avoid it happening again.
The waterfall sits about half a mile from the parking area, but you'll feel like you're in a different world.
Stick around, have a picnic, and enjoy the unparalleled beauty.
To the Kootenai tribe, the waterfall is a sacred site, part of the center of the world.
There is evidence suggesting that the Kootenai tribe once had sweat lodges and encampments in the area.
Kootenai Falls is spectacular, and every Montanan should see it at least once in their lifetime.
After just one visit, you'll understand why so many people fall in love with this area.
