The Up-and-Coming City in Mississippi That’s Perfectly Sized

The Magnolia State is home to a plethora of cities and towns of varying sizes. Mississippi's small towns are some of the best in the entire country, with a down-home charm and a sense of Southern hospitality you just can't find anywhere else. But if you feel like you're looking for a little more fast-paced excursion that's a little closer to a large city like Jackson, checking out one of our many mid-sized cities might be a good option for your next getaway. We have some great mid-sized cities in Mississippi that manage to combine small-town charm with big-city attractions, and one of our favorites is Natchez.

Natchez is the county seat of Adams County, and it boasts a population of just under 15,000. The city has a rich past, and you'll find plenty of reminders of the area's Native American history here. This region of the state was once populated by the Natchez people, who resided here until the French colonial period. If you're interested in learning more about the history of the Natchez people, you'll definitely want to pay a visit to the Grand Village of the Natchez Indians. This National Historic Landmark is home to ancient burial mounds and a museum featuring artifacts and art from the Natchez tribe.

The city is also home to several antebellum mansions that have been converted into house museums. Prior to the Civil War, many wealthy businessmen kept homes in Natchez, and several of them are now open for tours. Longwood, Stanton Hall, and Rosalie Mansion and Gardens are three homes-turned-museums in Natchez.

Love spending time outdoors? There's no shortage of parks and outdoor recreation areas here. Natchez State Park is located just north of the city and features some of the best fishing in Mississippi. No matter the time of year, Natchez is great for a day trip or a weekend getaway. However, this up-and-coming city in Mississippi comes alive brilliantly during the autumn season. The Natchez Trace Parkway is one of our favorite scenic drives in the state, and it’s a must-do activity when you’re in the area. The highway begins here and stretches for over 400 miles to Tennessee, with lots of stunning sights along the way.  

Of course, no visit to a town is complete without checking out some of the area's local businesses. Old South Trading Post is an old-school general store located in downtown Natchez that feels like a step back in time to simpler days. Silver Street Gallery and Gifts is another of our favorite shops in Natchez: it's a little boutique shop with a wide variety of clothes and souvenirs.

I love stopping by popular eateries when I'm visiting a new town. Natchez offers up everything from fine dining to more laid-back diners. Restaurant 1818 is one of the most beautiful restaurants in all of Mississippi and is perfect for celebrating a special occasion. Frankie's on Main is a newer spot, having opened up in an old bank in 2023, but it's already proving to be one of the city's most beloved restaurants.

Whether you're looking to enjoy the outdoors, visit local shops or restaurants, or learn about state history, the charming city of Natchez has something for everyone. It's perfectly sized for a day trip or a weekend getaway, and this beautiful city is waiting for you to explore.
