The small town of Hadley, Massachusetts may have less than 6000 residents, but it is so big on charm and beauty. Located near Springfield, Hadley is just under 25 square miles. There are several prominent colleges in the area, including Mount Holyoke College and Hampshire College. Hadley is known for beautiful scenery, fun outdoor activities, and its laid-back, welcoming vibe. Together these things make Hadley one of the best small towns in Massachusetts.

The Skinner State Park is one of the most popular attractions in Hadley. There are miles of trails for hikers of all abilities to enjoy and explore. Breathtaking views and beautiful scenery can be found at every turn of this gorgeous natural area.

The Silvio O. Conte National Fish and Wildlife Refuge is another beautiful place to hike in Hadley.

The trails are well-marked and easy to navigate. There is some excellent bird-watching at the refuge.

For some indoor exercise, head over to Central Rock Gym.

There are courses for all levels of climbers as well as other fitness and yoga classes.

After all that exercise, you will definitely be ready for a hearty meal. The Stables Restaurant in Hadley is a hidden gem.

This mom-and-pop establishment serves up large portions of breakfast and brunch dishes like kielbasa omelets and banana chocolate chip walnut pancakes. Specials are posted daily on The Stable's Facebook page.

The Hadley Farm Museum will take you on a trip back in time.

Step inside the barn which dates back to 1782 and discover toys, tools, and other historic items. There is also antique equipment and a really cool stagecoach on display. The museum has very limited hours but is worth a visit if your timing is right.

If you are visiting Hadley with little ones, I suggest you make a stop at The Eric Carle Museum of Picture Book Art in nearby Amherst.

Fans of this famous author who wrote and illustrated the classic children’s book “The Very Hungry Caterpillar” will love exploring the museum galleries, library, and apple orchard.
