This Weekend Itinerary Is Perfect For Exploring Springfield In Illinois
Springfield, Illinois offers a rich historical experience, great dining, and unique attractions, making it an ideal weekend getaway.
Illinois is known primarily for the city of Chicago. But did you know there is another town that is just as historic and interesting? That would be our beloved Springfield. A great place for a weekend visit, visitors will find lots of history, great places to eat, oodles of fantastic shopping, and so much more. Come along as we share just a few of the many wonderful things to do in Springfield, Illinois. It just might become one of your favorite vacation destinations!
Springfield is located in Central Illinois.
It is known for its most famous resident, Abraham Lincoln.
Springfield is also the capital of Illinois.
There are many attractions here to explore, especially if you are a history buff and want to learn more about Lincoln and the Civil War.
Start off your weekend with a visit to the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum.
The Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum features information on Lincoln's life and work, and is one of the most popular presidential libraries in the nation.
After visiting the library, it's definitely time for lunch.
Obed & Isaac's Microbrewery and Eatery is an American pub and brewery located downtown. It's known for its great burgers and delicious brews.
After lunch, head to the Illinois State Capitol Building.
When the legislature is in session, visitors can watch politics from balcony seating.
The grounds are simply gorgeous, so be sure to save some time to wander and enjoy it all.
The Inn at 835 is a great place to stay.
Featuring turn-of-the-century guest rooms, you'll feel like you've stepped back in time while still enjoying the comforts of modern living.
When you wake up on Sunday...
...head on over to Washington Park Botanical Gardens for a morning walk.
About 20 miles northwest of Springfield is another of Abe's historical sites.
And that is Lincoln's New Salem, which is a great place to spend the afternoon.
The village is set up just as it was in the 1830s when Lincoln would have lived there.
The historic site hosts many events throughout the year.
Finally, end your trip with dinner at the RiverBank Lodge, a little north of the village.
You can enjoy pizza and a variety of appetizers before hitting the road home.
