Everyone From Illinois Should Take This One Awesome Vacation Before They Die

Why spend a bunch of money to travel outside of the state when there are some pretty cool things to do right here in Illinois? A state-cation most certainly is in order, as the buzz from the holidays has worn off but we are not yet into spring. While many might suggest Chicago as the vacation you should go on--and I agree, there is a whole lot to do--I recommend heading to Springfield for your next vacation.

For those of us not from the area, and particularly those of us who live north of I-80, we think of Springfield as just the place where politicians might/might not get things done. But there is a whole lot more to this city! Here are some things you must do when you visit Springfield.

1. Visit the capitol building.

The architecture alone is stunning. If you can go while the legislature is in session, it is very cool to witness.

2. See the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum.

One of the best presidents ever, Lincoln has an impressive presidential library. Aside from an absolutely gorgeous design, there are plenty of exhibits and even reenactments sometimes.

3. Eat a horseshoe.

A horseshoe is a piece of Texas toast, a hamburger patty, french fries, and a bunch of cheese sauce. Do I need to describe this anymore for you?

4. Tour the Illinois State Museum.

The official museum of natural history in Illinois, this museum has tons to offer as far as exhibits relating to biology, zoology, and geology.

5. Enjoy the Henson Robinson Zoo.

Along the shores of Lake Springfield, this nonprofit zoo is a small zoo but there are animals here from across the globe.

6. Reflect at Lincoln's Tomb.

While in Springfield, pay your respects at the final resting place of President Abraham Lincoln.

7. View the Dana-Thomas House.

One of the best examples of Frank Lloyd Wright's "prairie period" homes, the Dana-Thomas house can be toured by the public.

8. Get your kicks on Route 66.

Springfield was once a bustling stop off of Route 66, and Shea's Route 66 Museum has preserved some of the hisory of it.

9. See Lincoln's home.

The Lincoln Home National Historic Site is the only home ever owned by Abraham Lincoln.
