We already did the heavy lifting by creating a handy map of the many falls in Illinois that you'll be seeing:
And here are some of the best waterfalls in Illinois that you will see on your trip. Get psyched, because these are pretty awesome!
1. John J. Duerr Forest Preserve
The hidden waterfall at Jon J. Duerr Nature Preserve can be reached after a short hike. Blackhawk Waterfall is short but sweet with a lovely melody of cascading water.
2. Waterfall Glen
The Waterfall Glen loop is a nice nine-mile walking and biking trail that is always a favorite for getting some good exercise. A highlight of the trail is the waterfall rushing over a shallow rock wall into a pool of water.
3. Matthiessen State Park
The beautiful Matthiessen State Park will treat you to canyon waterfalls, high bridges, and incredible scenic views. There is a 45-foot drop between the upper falls and the lower falls with a serene swimming hole at Lower Dells.
4. Starved Rock State Park
Starved Rock State Park is another one of our favorite places to enjoy nature. There are 18 sandstone canyons in the park many of which have waterfalls.
5. Burden Falls
Our next stop is Burden Falls in the beautiful Shawnee National Forest. At 167 feet surrounded by a rocky landscape perfect for climbing over boulders and sunning yourself near the misty waterfall, Burden Falls is one of our favorite waterfalls in Illinois.
6. Ferne Clyfe State Park
Ferne Clyfe State Park is the perfect place to stop for a fun and easy hike to the falls. At barely over a half mile you won't have to work up a sweat to enjoy this 100-foot waterfall. Even though the hike is short you'll definitely want to spend time exploring the area because it is just that cool.
7. Kinkaid Lower Falls
Kinkaid Lake Spillway is a delightful hidden gem in Murphysboro, Illinois. This three-tiered cascade is gorgeous and a blast to splash around in on a hot day.
