With hotter and humid weather upon us, it's time to decide where to cool off. We could always stay indoors with the air conditioning but who wants to do that after being cooped up all winter? Lakes, rivers, pools, and water parks are also great options, but what about a short hike to a waterfall that spills right into a lovely little pool? If that sounds like a good idea to you, then make your way to Ferne Clyffe State Park in Goreville.
Ferne Clyffe State Park is home to a beautiful intermittent waterfall that can be found along a short trail. In fact, this out-and-back trail is only 0.7-miles long and easy enough for children to hike along.
Big Rocky Hollow Trail is rated easy and is accessible year-round. It's close to a campground and many people use this trail for bird watching.
The trail is lined with giant boulders and rock formations along the way. This hike is scenic to say the least.
You will also be led past a stream and narrow canyon before the waterfall.
Once you get to the waterfall, you'll be amazed at the sight, especially if you're there after a rainfall. This 100-foot waterfall is intermittent so it will look more impressive on certain days and not on others.
The waterfall spills right into a gorgeous little pool below. This pool is a bit shallow for a full-on swim but it's certainly good enough for wading, splashing, and cooling off.
Adults and kids alike will have fun exploring the surrounding rock formations and the pool. Why not bring a picnic and stay awhile?
