There are natural getaways across the Prairie State, but sometimes long hikes and trails can be onerous on little ones. In central Illinois there is a family-friendly park unlike any other. Imagination Grove within Sugar Grove Nature Center in McLean, IL is an engaging day trip for people of all ages.
Located southwest of Bloomington, Sugar Grove Nature Center is technically in Funks Grove.
This historic unincorporated community is just off I-55 and contains one of the largest sections of undisturbed forest in Illinois.
The area is filled with white and bur oaks, as well as sugar maple trees that have made maple sugar production in the area possible.
Situated among Sugar Grove Nature Area's 1,000 acres of prairie and forests, Imagination Grove is a dedicated natural play area.
Imagination Grove can be found past the gazebo and sap house.
There is a covered bridge you can use to cross Timber Creek, but the more adventurous among us might prefer to wade through on foot.
This natural play area is all about letting children explore, play, and try new things.
This open area has a picnic table to take a rest, and some fun rope obstacles for kids to wander across.
One of the highlights for kids is getting to climb up this ladder and get a vantage point over the creek.
I recommend this activity for children ages five and up, as it can be quite high.
As with the other activities throughout the park, this climb is designed to get kids exploring, trying new things and taking risks.
There is a zipline, slackline, and swing where kids can let loose and fly among the trees.
Be sure to check out the clubhouse called Meg's Cabin where you can imagine what it would be like to live in a forest.
A sensory activity wall is an exciting way to engage with some of the materials that people would have used in everyday life back in the 19th-century.
And, best for last, we have the sandbox.
I likely wouldn't be as good a sport as this dog, but if you find yourself buried neck-deep in sand, don't worry. There is plenty of open space to run around and shake off any excess sand before loading back up into the car.
As you head out of Imagination Grove and back towards reality, you can keep the adventure going for a little longer. Just a 12 minute drive south will take you to a Truck Stop Diner where you can fuel up on a buffet of comfort foods before heading home. If you are taking an infant or toddler to Imagination Grove, a travel solution like this covered wagon can be a fun way to navigate the park while giving little ones the chance to rest and cool off when needed.
