Idaho is all about small-town life. When you're thinking of potential day trip destinations, planning a visit to one of these small but mighty communities is always a great option. There are many places to choose from in the Gem State, but one of the best small towns in Idaho is Idaho City. Many people refer to it as a ghost town, although it still maintains a healthy population of around 500 people. Boasting a rich history and an endless variety of attractions, your visit to this humble community will be one to remember.
The small town of Idaho City is far from your average ex-mining town. Still home to around 485 people, the community has proven itself as one of the best small towns in the state for a variety of reasons, and you simply need to experience its magic for yourself.
You'd never guess by the quiet town that you see today, but Idaho City was once the largest city in the Northwest. In the 1860s, it was home to more than 7,000 residents—larger than even Portland, Oregon. But if we know anything about boomtowns, it's that they eventually bust.
The mining industry was on the decline and the population went down with it. At one point around 1920, only 100 residents called the town home, causing many to think of the formerly prosperous community as an official ghost town.
It's not a ghost town anymore, but Idaho City still seems to be frozen in time. The downtown section looks like a scene straight from an old western, made up of century-old buildings including old homes, antique shops, general stores, and more.
A great place to stop during your visit is the Boise Basin Museum. Filled to the brim with information about the region during the Gold Rush era, you'll find yourself walking away with a stronger appreciation of Idaho's rugged beginnings.
One of the town's strangest destinations is known as the BoCo Sluice Box. Located on the corner of Main Street and Centerville Road, this quirky spot is a menagerie of antiques, vintage knick knacks, and other types of secondhand stuff.
A lot of people come for the history, but there's something for everyone at Idaho City, and it's no mystery why it's considered among the best small towns in Idaho. Whether you spend the day perusing the old shops or hiking in the surrounding area, your time in Idaho City will be something to remember.
