The Central Florida Roadside Stop That’s Also a Building You Walk Through

Aside from our beaches, gorgeous weather, and theme parks, most people associate alligators with Florida. Obviously, that makes sense since we have over a million gators living in our wetlands. And with that many “swamp puppies,” you would think that we have the most in the country. But guess what, we don’t! Louisiana earned those bragging rights, boasting over two million gators. But we have something here that Cajun Country doesn’t. Can you guess what it is? The world’s largest gator, of course! This oversized roadside attraction is located in the quirky town of Christmas, and it’s worth a detour on your next road trip through Central Florida.    

I have driven through Christmas (yes, on purpose) along Highway 50, aka Colonial Drive, from Titusville to Orlando. If you’re not from the area, US Highway 50 is one of the longest local roads in Central Florida. It’s approximately 45 miles long and runs across the state from the east to the west coast between Titusville and Weeki Wachee, respectively. Outside of Orlando and several surrounding cities, the state road is an off-the-beaten-path route, featuring lots of wetlands, grasslands, and rural areas. This means it’s perfect for a scenic road trip in the Sunshine State.

The whimsical town of Christmas is about halfway between Orlando and Titusville. You could probably guess that the town remains true to its name. While here, you’ll see holiday-themed street names and year-round holiday decorations. Plus, a historical park, Orlando Wetlands Park, and airboat tour companies are here. The post office is popular during the holiday when folks wait to get their mail stamped with the word “Christmas.” So, the tiny community is great for a detour, especially during the jolly season.    

Another reason to stop? To snap a pic next to Swampy, the world’s largest alligator. Ok, I know, it’s not a real-life alligator; instead, Swampy is a 200-foot-long structure that’s classified as the world's largest alligator-shaped building. The massive stone gator is at the entrance to Jungle Adventures, a wildlife park in Christmas. Inside the oversized roadside attraction, there is a gift shop, a ticket booth, and offices.   

Swampy has been around since the late 1980s, and it’s one of the coolest things to see in Christmas, Florida. You'll be blown away by the size of the massive gator, and the teeth are the same height as a little human, literally. It’s truly a sight to behold. 

Before it was transformed into a giant reptile, the building was once part of the living quarters for the Brooks family, who founded the animal park. Initially, the owners planned to have guests walk through the large mouth with exposed teeth to enter the attraction, but a lawsuit from another gator park prevented that from happening. However, Swampy’s head serves as a backdrop for pictures of passersby and visitors to the town of Christmas. It’s hard not to stop and snap a pic of this giant reptile after driving through rural Florida.  

As for the wildlife park, Jungle Adventures, it’s an awesome attraction with live animal encounters, swamp tours, and educational programs. Of course, gators are plentiful here, and you get to see them in the wild and witness live feedings, too. If you have extra time to spare on your road trip, it’s a fun place for folks of all ages.  

So, is Swampy worth a stop on your next road trip along State Road 50 through Central Florida? Yes, it absolutely is! You don’t want to miss your chance to explore the community of Christmas and see the coolest roadside gator in Florida. Be sure to have your camera ready to capture pics of Swampy. After all, it’s not every day that you run into the world’s largest alligator. If you ask me, Swampy is a real Florida treasure.
