It is no secret that there are many Colorado ghost towns (more than 1,500 to be exact). Most of these abandoned towns - which were primarily homesteads for miners and/or railroad workers - can still be visited today, except for Montgomery, which was a unique and historic town that has been submerged in water. Come along as we explore this fascinating underwater town in Colorado.
Montgomery, Colorado was founded in 1861 to capitalize on the silver deposits that had been discovered in the region.
It was like so many up-and-coming Colorado communities of the time.
Those who came to Montgomery were driven by the hope of wealth and prosperity in the form of mineral riches.
During its height, Montgomery was a truly thriving town.
It boasted not only 150 cabins and numerous residents, but amenities such as hotels and a large saloon and dance hall.
Sadly, like so many other towns during its time, the nearby mines ran dry and the community folded.
Several decades later, Montgomery was purchased by the City of Colorado Springs, that would then construct the (still standing) Montgomery Reservoir, which flooded over the former mining town
All of it is now just a part of Colorado Springs history...
...and all that remains today of the once booming Montgomery is one of its five sawmills.Take a look at some aerial footage of this beautiful area from YouTuber Jefferson Real Estate, Inc.:
