There’s No Community In Alabama More Enchanting And Historic Than Marion

Marion, Alabama, is a historic town known for its antebellum courthouse, military museum, and outdoor activities.

There's no denying that here in Alabama, we're home to many enchanting and historic towns. One of these towns is Marion, which offers lots of history in a beautiful setting. To learn all about Marion, one of the most historic towns in Alabama, take a look below.

Marion, formerly known as "Muckle's Ridge," was founded shortly after 1819 and is the county seat of Perry County, Alabama.

There are a lot of historic buildings in this small Alabama town, including the Perry County Courthouse, which was built in 1856. What makes this courthouse extra special is the fact that it's one of only four antebellum courthouses in Alabama that's still used today.

Nicknamed "The College City," Marion is home to the former Marion Female Seminary. This was one of the first colleges for women in the nation, and it currently houses the Perry County Historical Society and the Perry County High School Alumni Association.

Located inside the town's former City Hall is now the Alabama Military Hall of Honor Museum. Here you'll see pictures, plaques, and numerous military artifacts.

One of the most popular historic landmarks in Marion is the childhood home of Coretta Scott King, the wife of Martin Luther King, Jr.

If you love the outdoors, you'll want to visit Perry Lakes Park. This park's interpretive nature trails are great for anyone wanting to hike while being surrounded by lots of lush greenery. Do forget to wear comfortable hiking boots during your journey.

And finally, while exploring the town of Marion, you'll encounter quite a few murals that have been painted on the exterior of buildings. These beautiful murals show just how important this town is to the community of people who live here.
