8 Things Everyone In Austin Should Avoid At All Costs
Life in Austin is full of art and excitement, but sometimes little things can get in the way. Don’t get bogged down by small annoyances. It’s easy to dodge the city’s less-than-pleasant aspects. These are eight things that everyone in Austin should avoid at all costs.
1. Driving along I-35 during rush hour.
Rush hour can spring up at almost any moment. Don't be surprised to find a Sunday morning pileup between Oltorf and Holly Street. On second thought, maybe its best to avoid the entire highway at all costs.
2. Stiffing the band
Don't forget to tip the musicians! Let's keep Austin the Live Music Capitol of the World.
3. Wearing maroon on game day.
Unless you want to start a fight, don't sport Aggie colors during a Longhorn football game.
4. Swimming in Lady Bird Lake
Don't be tempted by the lake's gorgeous beauty. Swimming in the Colorado River is illegal. That doesn't mean you can't enjoy the views, though! You should definitely get out there and experience the lake via riverboat, kayak, or paddle board.
5. The line at Franklin Barbecue past 11:00 AM
If you get to Franklin after 11:00, there's a good chance this iconic barbecue joint will run out of brisket by the time you reach the front. Avoid this mistake. If you really want to devour this delightfully delicious meat, get there early or order in advance.
6. Complaining about people moving here.
When you live in a city as amazing as Austin it's easy to want to keep it to yourself, but Austin's residents are what make this place so exciting!
7. Mispronouncing street names
Of course, Austinites don't make this task easy. We like to adjust the way typical street names are pronounced. If you're caught calling The Drag "Guadalupe," however, people might mistake you for a tourist.
8. Painting over beautiful murals at the HOPE Outdoor Gallery
Technically, artists need permission to paint here, but that rule mostly lives in the honor system. A good rule of thumb: if you can't paint anything better over it, leave the art alone.
