Construction of the road was completed in 1996 after a whopping 34 years of planning. The Cherohala Skyway has become a popular drive for tourists looking to peek at fall foliage ever since.
The name “Cherohala” is derived from the two national forests that the route passes through: the Cherokee and Nantahala National Forests.

Just a half-mile past Bald River Falls you’ll find Baby Falls, a tinier waterfall that features a camping area and picnic tables.

The entire area is thick with native plant life and small creatures that call the forests of Tennessee home, so keep an eye out and stay safe. During the autumn you’ll be treated to gorgeous colors, and in the springtime, wildflowers dot the stream’s shores.
