This State Natural Area Is Home To The Newest State Park
In Tennessee, our state parks are so beautiful they easily rival some of our country’s big national parks. We are blessed to have such stunning places to explore and enjoy, and the list of those parks has just gotten bigger as we introduce to you to our newest Tennessee State Park: Savage Gulf State Park. For those who were familiar with this natural area before, it was actually considered a section of South Cumberland State Park. Now Savage Gulf has been given the proper treatment of being named its own state park and it is a gorgeous area indeed.
Savage Gulf is home to many overlooks and vistas with towering mountains and rocky limestone cliffs.
This moderate hike will bring you to a stunning waterfall that drops 50 feet down to the clear blue pool below. The cool water is deep and a perfect place to swim; in fact, many people will hike down to Greeter Falls and spend the whole day among the rocks and swimming in the water. Stone Door is another popular natural wonder worth seeking out.
This easy hike is under two miles in length, and along the way, you will be blown away by the scenery surrounding you. Vast mountains and valleys are visible on a couple of observation decks, and right before you arrive at Stone Door you can stand on the cliffside to get unobstructed views of this newest Tennessee state park. Stone Door is a staircase made in a huge crack in the cliffside that resembles a massive door and is quite a sight to see.
Savage Gulf is filled with waterfalls and one quick and easy one can be found right by the trailhead of Stone Door.
Laurel Falls is only 287 yards away down a staircase. You can witness this natural beauty from a deck overlook giving you a great view of Laurel Falls. Check out this Adventuring in the Moment video to see Laurel Falls and the stunning views on the way to Stone Door.
When you visit Savage Gulf, another waterfall you should consider seeing is Savage Falls.
One thing you will notice about this state park is how well the trails are maintained. Unique features like spiral staircases at Greeter Falls or the wooden bridge at Savage Falls show just how much care goes into these trails. A beautiful hike with interesting features... what more could you ask for?
Some of the waterfalls and overlooks we mentioned only is a taste of the incredible natural beauty that Savage Gulf has to offer. This truly is an amazing place and somewhere where we highly recommend traveling to for a weekend in the wilderness.
