You Can Sleep and Hunt for Ghosts at This Airbnb in West Virginia
Sitting on a West Virginia farm with a dark history, paranormal activity, and Bigfoot sightings, this Airbnb is a ghost hunter's dream destination.
No matter what time of year, there are those of us who thrive on spooky adventures—and it doesn't have to be during spooky season. Seeking paranormal activity, whether apparitions, moving objects, or disembodied voices, is a sought-after experience for many. In Summersville, West Virginia, the 350-acre Raven Rock Farm has a dark history, which may lend to the ghost sightings and other inexplicable activity reported here. But if you're more intrigued than frightened, you can stay at the farm's Airbnb and find out for yourself.
The Mystic Pond Cabin at Raven Rock Farm in Summerville may look like a charming abode, perfect for a cozy overnight stay (and, believe me, it is!), but the farm property it sits on has a bit of a dark history. The acreage used to belong to the Raven-Peerless Mine, with many deep mine shafts and job hazards that ended up costing the lives of seven men. Accidents like collapsed roofs and explosions were just a couple of causes of death when the mine was in operation in the 1940s. Then, in the 1990s, a hunter on the property died of a heart attack, bringing the number of recorded deaths on the property up to eight.
Between the Mystic Pond Cabin built on the old coal mine site and the farm's dark history, it may come as no surprise that there have been ghostly sightings here—it's said that the spirits of several mine workers never left. Farm owner Sherri Brake, who also owns Haunted Heartland Tours, has researched the paranormal for over 30 years and has written books about hauntings and the paranormal. This farm certainly seems like the perfect spot for her. In the Airbnb, you'll find ghost-hunting gear to use during your visit, so you can see how many ghosts and other spooky entities you'll find.
So, what is it like to stay at Mystic Pond Cabin? This charming home of only 500 square feet has two bedrooms and room enough for four guests. The decor is just as quirky as you'd expect, with mystical decorative touches, including "floating" candles in the bedrooms, linens with celestial patterns, tree branches, and hanging crystals. One bedroom even has an entire wall of Himalayan salt backlit with LED lights, and, for fun, a friendly ghost pillow is placed on each bed. On the bookshelves are books on ghosts, hauntings, and other fascinating subjects.
Of course, there is a cozy living room where you can curl up in front of the electric fireplace and watch your favorite horror movie or ghost hunting show. And the kitchen offers all the basics, including a dishwasher, fridge, dishes, utensils, coffee maker, and more. This place is one of a kind, and I think anyone would be happy to spend the night here.
Head outdoors, and you can sit out on the large deck, sit by the pond in the evening with a roaring campfire, and go fishing at the farm's spring-fed pond when the weather is warm. If you were wondering if there were animals on this farm, there are! You'll most likely see the resident ducks walking around by the pond. Other farm animals include roosters, chickens, goats, and more.
During your stay, if you feel like venturing off the farm, the West Virginia Bigfoot Museum, the Haunted Haymon House, and the Flatwoods Green Monster Museum are only 20 minutes away. Another notoriously haunted destination, Trans-Allegheny Lunatic Asylum, is 40 minutes from the farm. While Summersville is quite rural, there are quite a few attractions nearby that you can (and should!) visit during your stay.
There's certainly something a bit mystical about the Mystic Pond Cabin. Perhaps it's the way it's decorated, the mysterious sightings that have been recorded at the farm over the years (including sightings of Bigfoot), or perhaps both. But taking a getaway to this secluded farm in West Virginia is one you won't soon forget.
