When you're seeking a getaway in South Carolina, the list of possibilities seems endless. But if you want to spend the night in a lighthouse... you'll have only one choice. The only lighthouse in the Palmetto State where you can spend the night is found in one of South Carolina's most interesting locales: a barrier island that doesn't have cars and is only reachable by way of a ferry. For all of the hullabaloo associated with getting there, the historic Haig Point Lighthouse really is worth the effort.
Seen here in 1885 just 12 years after it was first lit, the Haig Point Lighthouse (a.k.a. the Rear Range light) is approaching 150 years old in it's perch at the northern end of Daufuskie Island on the Calibogue Sound.
The Calibogue Sound separates the northern tip of Daufuskie Island and the southern tip of Hilton Head Island where the intracoastal waterway meets the Atlantic Ocean.
Today, the gorgeously restored lighthouse is the only one in South Carolina where guests can actually spend the night. Guests sleep exactly where the light keeper would have slept when the light was in official service between 1873 and 1924.
Imagine a weekend here with the operational light (now functioning as a private navigational light source) high above in the square tower right over the bedrooms on the second floor.
And mornings, days, afternoons, and evenings spent enjoying all that Daufuskie Island has to offer — including fresh ocean breezes.
The two-bedroom two-bath house accommodates four in classic style. Every attempt to maintain the integrity of the original architecture was made during the renovation process.
Rooms are large and the space is bright and cozy at the same time.
The lighthouse is for rent in the Discovery Experience offered by Haig Point.
The Discovery Experience includes a three-day two-night weekend package that comes with: a round of golf for two, a breakfast for two at the clubhouse, a lunch for two at the clubhouse, a dinner for two at the Calibogue Club, a complimentary pass for Daufuskie ferries and water taxis, a personal tour of the community, and of course, your three-day, two-night stay in the Haig Point Lighthouse.
The light keeper's house has a full kitchen, should you want to prepare meals at home.
Would you ever want to stay overnight in a historic lighthouse? Then here's your chance!
The Haig Point Lighthouse is available year-round as part of the Discovery Experience offered by Haig Point.
