Discover Columbia's unique attractions, including The Grand on Main and Hotel Trundle, for a memorable trip.
South Carolina's capital city, Columbia, is a great day trip destination. But there are many options for things to do and places to eat, so you may wish to opt for an overnighter or weekend adventure if you'd like more time to explore this neat city. And where better to start in any place than Main Street? For this adventure, we're starting out at The Grand on Main, a fun boutique bowling alley that's so much more than just bowling. Then, it's just a few steps or quick drive to the next block over for a stay in the best hotel in Columbia, S.C., Hotel Trundle.
Boutique bowling alleys have been on the rise in recent years as interest has risen in social types of places for people to go with friends, family, and colleagues that are outside of a traditional bar or restaurant setting.
The Grand on Main opened in 2017 after delays due to a tragic fire that started from a spark from a welder's torch while renovations were being completed on the building dating back to 1866.
It's the only destination on Main Street with fun activities besides going to the movies. Enjoy bowling in one of seven state-of-the-art Brunswick bowling lanes with automated scoring, retractable bumpers, and mechanisms to measure the speed of the bowling balls – a rainbow range of colors from purple to green to hot pink.
But in fact, the building used to house The Grand Theatre, which opened in 1909 as a vaudeville house that offered both live performances and moving motion pictures. This history inspired the name for the bowling alley and the old sign was kept. And along with bowling, you can enjoy a delicious meal in an upscale casual dining atmosphere.
It's a wonderful place for families or a date night option for couples.
The Robinson Room serves desserts and cocktails. It used to be located below the bowling alley but has moved just across the street.
The Grand on Main also has an arcade, pool, shuffleboard, and other classic games available to play.
If you'd rather check in to your hotel before bowling, Hotel Trundle is located on Taylor Street in the block adjacent to the one where The Grand on Main sits.
