The Most Famous Hotel In New Hampshire Is Also One Of The Most Historic Places You’ll Ever Sleep

Wentworth by the Sea is a historic hotel in New Hampshire known for its charm, beauty, and significant history.

It's actually difficult to choose the most historic hotel in New Hampshire because there are so many accommodation options loaded with history. Many have been around for decades, giving them staying power. But length of existence isn't the only qualifier to make a place historic. Some spots, around for just a short time, have had historic events take place making the special in their own right. Today we're featuring a place that's beautiful, but also has the merit of being in existence for almost 150 years!

Wentworth by the Sea was built in 1870 by Daniel Chase, a Boston-based distiller. The hotel, which became known as the "Ship Building," was the location of the signing of the Portsmouth Peace Treaty in 1905.

Since then, the hotel has become one of the most recognizable overnight destinations in the state.

The hotel sits right on the water in a section of New Castle known as Great Island.

You'll find it on the border of New Hampshire and Maine, smack in the middle of the Piscataqua River.

Over the years, hotel ownership changed frequently. And while today it's owned by a large hotel holding company, it has the same charm and beauty it did on day one.

The entire hotel and spa has been renovated, which means clean lines and a contemporary feel.

In the summer, the pool area is the place to be!

And anytime is great for a meal at SALT Kitchen & Bar.

This is one very special place to spend a few nights and we're sure you'll agree.

Wentworth by the Sea Hotel & Spa is open year-round. Today it's owned by Marriott but it still has much of the charm and beauty it held way back when it first opened. You can learn more about the hotel, see more photos and even book your stay by visiting their website. You can also follow them on Facebook. The hotel can be reached on 603-422-7322.
