First Time Camper? This Accessible Campground in New Hampshire Will Make You a Camping Convert
Anxious about first-time camping? The Barn Door Hostel and Campground is the perfect place to ease into the adventure.
Considering camping? While I can’t say that I’m a first-time camper, I have to admit that it has been several years since I pitched a tent in the woods. When it comes to the great outdoors, we are more of a cozy cabin (with indoor plumbing) type of family. However, I do have many fond memories of tent and A-frame camping with friends from my younger years, and I would not be opposed to giving it another go. Fortunately, I have found an ideal spot in the White Mountains that offers a variety of lodging options, incredible views, and convenient amenities for campers of all levels. Whether you are a novice camper or just making a return to the experience, The Barn Door Hostel and Campground in Rumney is a great place to ease into the adventure.
This family-owned campground is perfect for those seeking a peaceful weekend getaway or a rock climbing adventure at nearby Rumney Rocks. This accessible, White Mountains oasis is located on nine scenic acres and features picturesque views and a stream where you can cool off and swim. Appalachian Trail hiking, gorgeous waterfalls, and the Polar Caves attraction are just a short drive away.
The Barn Door offers various options for sleeping under the stars. You can go with the traditional camping experience and pitch a tent, or you can bring your camping vehicle. For the ultimate outdoor nighttime adventure, hang up a hammock and enjoy a peaceful night swaying in the breeze. All of these campsites start at an affordable $11 per night per person. Hot showers, eco-friendly toilets, wi-fi, and charging stations are included in your stay. And there is even free coffee on weekends!
If you are a little apprehensive about spending a night surrounded by nature, you can choose to stay in the Barn Door's hostel, which has mixed accommodations for four, eight, and ten people. And if you don’t feel like sharing a space, you can reserve one of the building's private rooms. Guests have use of the hostel’s living area and kitchen.
But my favorite Barn Door sleeping option is something totally unexpected - a refurbished school bus. It is definitely the type of camping that I could get into! The Barn Door Bus is a private camping spot featuring accommodations for up to four guests. The bus includes a private toilet and sink, a desk, and even a working wood stove. And if you have a fear of missing out on stargazing, there is no need to worry. The bus comes with its own rooftop deck and a private fire pit. What a unique way to spend a night!
