Montana’s Longest Standing Hotel Is Still Going Strong, And You’ll Want To Stay
The Grand Union Hotel in Fort Benton, Montana, offers a charming historic stay with fine dining and scenic views.
If you enjoy local history, it's impossible not to fall in love with Fort Benton. Not only is it called the Birthplace of Montana because of its historical significance, but it also happens to be the home of the Grand Union Hotel, which dates all the way back to 1882, seven years before Montana became a state. And these days, it's more charming than ever.
The Grand Union is located at 1 Grand Union Square, on the banks of the Missouri River.
After its construction (which cost $50,000 and $150,000 on furnishings), the hotel opened with the biggest party the town and Territory had ever seen. More than 300 people attended, including some of the most prominent men and women in Montana history.
The hotel was instantly loved by those early Montanans, and it's easy to see why.
No detail was missed during the construction and design of this place.
In the late 90s, the Grand Union was completely renovated under the supervision of the National Trust for Historic Preservation, the U.S. Parks Department, and the Montana State Historic Preservation Office.
As a result, its original character was well-preserved.
The Union Grille Restaurant is located onsite, and it happens to be the best spot for fine dining in town...
...and to call the food delicious would be an understatement.
The innovative menu rotates, but it always serves classic American entrees and some creative cuisine.
The 26 guest rooms have all been lovingly restored, and they're spacious but cozy.
Rates vary by season and room size, but you can expect to pay around $150 per night, which includes a continental breakfast.
From seasonal soirees to weddings and receptions, locals love hosting events at the Grand Union...
...and the best part is, you'll wake up to views like this.
Treat yourself to a stay at this charming historic hotel — you can book on their website. And while you're at it, spend some time exploring Fort Benton.
