Discover the Americana Town in Minnesota So Charming You’ll Want to Keep It a Secret

Lanesboro, Minnesota, is a classic Americana small town that's a popular weekend destination. You'll wish it was still a secret, but you won't regret a visit.

You'll find Lanesboro, Minnesota, tucked into a forested valley amid the towering limestone bluffs of the state's Driftless Area. The town's streets are lined with historic buildings and green spaces that simply ooze Americana charm and make one wonder how it managed to remain undiscovered by the influencer set for as long as it did. You'll definitely want to keep Lanesboro a secret—but I regret to inform you that the cat has long left the bag. You'll just have to share this charming community with all the other folks who love it—and you'll be happy you did.

At nearly 150 years old, the charming community of Lanesboro is home to just over 700 year-round residents, but it attracts thousands of visitors throughout the year—especially during summer and autumn weekends when you may be hard-pressed to find a parking spot. It's not just the weekenders and day trippers who flock to the town, however. Lanesboro is, arguably, the most popular stop and/or starting point for cyclists on the gorgeous Root River State Trail, as well as for paddlers along the river's namesake water trail. For many, in fact, Lanesboro is their destination.

Along the charming town's handsome main street, Parkway Avenue, you'll find three parks—Mill Pond, Sylvan, and Gateway—where you can enjoy this beautiful section of the Root River valley. Lanesboro's historic downtown area also stretches along a few blocks of Parkway Avenue.

Sylvan is the largest among the town's parks and lies adjacent to its public library, below the iconic spires of Church Hill. Each June, Sylvan Park plays host to Lanesboro's annual Rhubarb Festival. Mill Pond, which is literally across the street, is where you'll find the iconic views of the Lanesboro dam that are often associated with the village. Mill Pond and Sylvan Parks both offer camping; there's a large private campground on the eastern edge of town, as well.

North of the parks, closer to the bluffs that tower above the town, you'll find Lanesboro's historic business district. During peak times, it's home to a vibrant dining, antiquing, and arts scene, including a popular professional acting troupe, The Commonweal Theatre Company, whose shows range from zany comedies to Shakespearean classics.

You'll also find plenty of options for dining and refreshments, like Sylvan Brewing, which is a popular waypoint for cyclists as well as folks who are meandering the Historic Bluff Country National Scenic Byway on a weekend afternoon. It's one of my favorite places to take a break from exploring.

Lanesboro is a longtime go-to destination for weekend getaways and has, in fact, earned a reputation for being the "Bed and Breakfast Capital" of Minnesota. My favorite place to stay is the Stone Mill Hotel and Suites, which is located right downtown, within easy walking distance of all the action (I'm partial to the Forest Whirlpool Suite, myself)—not that any place in Lanesboro is too far from anywhere else. The town's easy walkability is a large part of its charm.

You won't find a much more classic slice of Americana in the Land of 10,000 Lakes than Lanesboro. It's too late to keep it a secret, but you should definitely spend time here anyway. I recommend autumn when the bluffs are bursting with color, but any time, really, is wonderful in this charming Minnesota town. I think you'll agree.
