Paddling Through The Hidden Root River Bluffs Is A Magical Minnesota Adventure That Will Light Up Your Soul

The stunning Root River runs through the scenic southeastern part of the state - all the way to the Mississippi - and its ruggedly idyllic setting makes it an ideal destination for your next Minnesota paddling adventure. So grab your PFD and paddle, and head for Minnesota’s beautiful Bluff Country.

The Root River valley is a renowned destination for cyclists, hikers, antique enthusiasts, and bed-and-breakfast lovers.

It’s also a perfect place for a peaceful paddle in the Land of 10,000 Lakes.

On your float down the Root, you may run into a few riffles, but there are generally no rapids to speak of.

For the most part, the languid and beautiful river is smooth, and the beauty of the landscape through which you paddle will feed your soul.

The Root River State Water Trail follows several segments of the river, starting among the high bluffs of its western, upper reaches.

The northern and western forks rise near Chatfield. The south fork of the Root River flows from the mouth of Mystery Cave in Forestville/Mystery Cave State Park.

The river’s forks join near Whalan, just east of Lanesboro.

There, the river and its valley widen, but the forested bluffs and wooded bottomlands continue as it meanders on its descent to the Mississippi.
