It’s Bizarre To Think That Michigan Is Home To The World’s Largest Collection Of Comic Books, But It’s True

The Wolverine State has a lot of things going for it. Some of the best parts of Michigan lie in its unique quirks like having the only floating post office in the world or having more than 100 lighthouses. That's to be expected when you have nearly 3,000 miles of coastline! Michigan is number one in a lot of areas, but one specific area may surprise you, and that's the comic book collection. Michigan is home to the largest comic book collection in the entire world! Let's check it out:

Located in East Lansing, it's no surprise that the Michigan State University Libraries are a book lover's paradise.

With plenty of seating and a modern aesthetic, it's no wonder why students prefer to study here.

Not only is it home to one of the largest Africana collections (over 200,000 items), but it’s also home to one of the largest academic voice collections, with over 40,000 hours of spoken word recordings.

One of the most unique collections happens to be in the basement of the main library.

Here, you'll find the comic book collection, which happens to be the largest comic book collection in the world.

The collection began in the 1960s when an MSU professor donated his collection of 6,000 comics.

When you’re given that many comics, it’s only natural to continue to grow the collection, and that’s exactly what Randall Scott, the library’s comic book bibliographer has done since he took the position in 1973.

Today, the collection has grown to over 200,000 items dating all the way back to the 1800s.

The majority of the comics are American, but every continent except Antarctica is represented in the collection.

You'll some familiar faces like Batman and Spiderman, sure. But seeing some of the vintage comic books is really a treat.
