11 Extremely Weird Things Only People From Florida Do
Floridians have unique traditions and habits that set them apart from people in other states.
Around here, we think Florida is pretty cool. There's plenty of sunshine, water, and wildlife to enjoy--and we wouldn't choose to live anywhere else. Life here is a little different than anywhere else in the country, and there are a few things we people from Florida do that would baffle people living in other states. We like to celebrate our state and everything that makes it unique, so here are a few weird things only Floridians do:
1. Wear flip-flips all year long.
Just make sure to choose an appropriate fall or winter shade for your toes.
2. Put plastic flamingos in their yards.
Sometimes people also give them as gifts when someone hits middle age, as you can see here. It's just one of those funny things about Florida!
3. At Christmastime we light up palm trees.
Decking the palms is just as much a Christmas tradition as decking the halls.
4. And Santa arrives by shrimp boat.
In the small Northwestern Florida town of Apalachicola, at least. This is such a great part of living in Florida!
5. Grab sweaters as soon as it hits 65 degrees outside.
That's cold for us Florida people.
6. We have a knack for getting into trees.
Most kids here grow up surrounded by great climbing trees.
7. We understand the deliciousness of boiled peanuts.
(Trust me, it's weird to some people.)
8. Take any opportunity to party, or dress up like pirates.
Or both, as you can see here in the Gasparilla Pirate Festival.
9. Find any way possible to enjoy Key lime pie.
Key lime pie dipped in chocolate, Key lime cookies, Key lime ice cream, Key lime candies, Key lime salsa, Key lime jelly, Key lime hot sauce, and pretty much anything else.
10. Build life-size dinosaurs, just because.
You can see them on the highway or at Dinosaur World in Plant City.
11. We coexist with gators, sharks, snakes, and lots of bugs...by choice.
It's the price you pay to live in paradise.
