Frazier grew up in the community of Laurel Bay, where his family worked as sharecroppers. He was one of twelve children to Dolly Alston-Frazier and Rubin Frazier.

Frazier even reigned as the undisputed heavyweight champion from 1970 to 1973 and earned a gold medal at the 1964 Summer Olympics at an amateur level.
