Pittsburgh is home to quite a few bakeries that can easily satisfy our sweet tooth. One bite and you’ll feel as though you’ve journeyed straight to the heart of Italy.

Tucked in a strip mall in Monroeville, about a 20-minute drive from downtown Pittsburgh, Moio’s Italian Pastry Shop has been a neighborhood staple for generations.

The popular bakery got its start in 1935 in East Liberty, in an area that was once known as Little Italy. (Today, Bloomfield holds distinction as the city’s Little Italy.) Raphael Moio, the founder of the bakery…

...moved his pastry shop to Monroeville’s Mall Annex in 1972. Eventually, however, Tony Moio, Raphael’s son, took over the bakery and moved it to its present location, right off of the PA Turnpike.

If you’ve never been to this old-school Italian bakery, you and your taste buds are in for a delightfully delicious treat.

A quick peek at the menu is sure to get your mouth watering, especially when you see all of the decadent and authentic Italian pastries – from cannoli to ricotta tarts.

That’s just the beginning. Try such classics as the Napoleon, nut horns, or lady locks. All Italian pastries, and these are just a small sampling, are made fresh.

While the old-school Italian pastries are a must-try, you don’t want to pass up all of the other goodies at the bakery. You can’t go wrong with a fresh-baked pie, available in more than a dozen flavors, or a slice of scrumptious cake.

You’ll probably also want to pick up some Italian cookies. Pignolis, macaroons, fruit biscotti, and chocolate-covered coconuts are among your choices.

Moio’s is also known for its decadent and beautifully-designed birthday, wedding, and other cakes.
