One of the most fascinating places to visit in the world is Stonehenge. We still don’t know much about who exactly created this circle of stones back in prehistoric times, and there is definitely an eerie vibe to this beautiful site. But you don’t have to travel to Europe to get a Stonehenge vibe. In fact, there is an ancient rock ring in Oregon, too, that has, in some ways, a similar feel.

Fort Rock is one of the strangest, most surreal sites in Oregon.

Set out in north Lake County, Oregon, this imposing sight sticks out due to the emptiness around it.
With tall walls and its circle structure, you can see why it earned its name — it looks like a fort!

Of course, it's not really a fort — it's a tuff ring set on an Ice Age lake bed.
What is a tuff ring, exactly? A low-standing volcano with wide, bowl-shaped craters.

It's massive, too: The ring is about 4,460 feet in diameter and is about 200 feet high.
Of course, it's not man-made like Stonehenge. But still, you can see why the comparison can be made.

It's also a place with a lot of ancient history — artifacts from thousands of years ago have been found here.
Fort Rock has many different hiking trails. They're all very beautiful and present a whole new side of the ring.
