The Best Dog-Friendly Hikes in Madison, Wisconsin for an Outdoor Adventure

If you'd like an outdoor adventure with your pup and happen to live near the capital city, here are five dog-friendly hikes in Madison, Wisconsin, you may want to consider.

Dogs have always been a big part of my family; if you're like me, you want to bring them with you wherever you go! Dogs should be allowed everywhere, from hotels to cafes to parks, right? Well, the only problem is that they aren't. However, if you'd like an outdoor adventure with your pup and happen to live near or are visiting the capital city, here are five dog-friendly hikes in Madison, Wisconsin, you may want to consider:

1. Picnic Point Marsh Loop

At a mile long, Picnic Point is a peninsula that juts out into Lake Mendota in Madison. If you love water views and want to take your dog along on an outdoor adventure, this hike is for you! The Picnic Point Marsh Loop is 2.1 miles long and quite a peaceful hike. Not only will you have lake views, but you'll pass by a restored tallgrass prairie.

2. Tenney Park Lagoon Loop via Ed Jepsen Way - Tenney Park

Tenney Park is a 37-acre urban park along Lake Mendota and the Yahara River and offers both water views and views of the city. This lovely nature spot provides an escape from the urban environment that the whole family can enjoy. The 0.7-mile Tenney Park Lagoon Loop via Ed Jepsen Way is paved, six feet wide, and accessible to those with wheelchairs, mobility equipment, and strollers. Dogs are allowed (on a leash, of course) and will be excited to be out and about at a park with the rest of the family!

3. Capital City State Trail - North Madison

The 6.1-mile North Madison section of the Capital City State Trail is a moderate trek that connects a few city parks. A paved path, it's a popular spot for biking, jogging, and walking, and it's wheelchair and stroller-friendly. Dogs are allowed, of course, but must remain on a leash. It's a great city trail for time outdoors the entire family can enjoy.

4. Lake Monona Loop

Olbrich Park is a 90-acre urban park with much to offer, including a botanical garden, a gaga ball pit, ball courts (yes, this includes pickleball!), a playground, and more. With its location along Lake Monona, there are opportunities to spend time on the water or at the beach. For a scenic hike through the park, you can take your pup along the Lake Monona Loop. While it is 16 miles long as it circumnavigates the lake, there are multiple points of entry, so you don't have to complete the whole trek. Keep your dog on a leash while at the park and watch for signs, though, as there are parts of the park where dogs are not allowed.

5. Lake Farm County Park Loop

The loop trail at Lake Farm County Park is an easy, well-marked 2.2 miles through a beautiful landscape with water views along the way. Your dog may be interested in the variety of birds and other wildlife, such as deer and turtles, so keep your eyes out and your dog on its leash.

Are you and your pup ready for one of these dog-friendly hikes in Madison, Wisconsin? These are great options for fresh air and quality time with your furry best friend.
