West Virginia is filled with hidden gems. The entire state is an underrated natural wonder, after all! But nature and history lovers should especially take note of Eidolon Nature Preserve, a stunning, little-known spot hidden away on the outskirts of Great Cacapon in the Eastern Panhandle of West Virginia.
Eidolon Nature Preserve, named for the phantom women of Greek mythology that were made of mist and light by Zeus, is perched atop Purslane Mountain just twenty minutes west of Berkeley Springs, West Virginia.
This magical nature area is a true hidden gem perfect for nature lovers.
It includes such treasures as multiple fresh springs, an old stone house, and many interesting plants, birds, trees, and fungi.
Before being willed to the Nature Conservancy, the land which now comprises this preserve once belonged to the Zapoleon family, nature-loving economists from Washington, D.C., and Mrs. Marguerite Zapoleon's field notes are still used to educate modern visitors to this historic homestead.
In addition to a plethora of nature, the area includes several unique historic sites: old ledge quarries, the remnants of the Zapoleons' stone cottage, and stone walls from settlers who lived here even before the Zapoleons, all the way back to the early 1900s.
The Potomac Valley Audubon Society partners with the Nature Conservancy to manage this 354-acre paradise.
Come in spring to see rare wildflowers. Come in summer to enjoy lush green meadows. Come in fall to gawk at the vibrant leaves. Come in winter, when the whole mountain is sleeping quietly under a blanket of clean snow.
