1. Berkeley Springs State Park's history
This is the only spa in the U.S. that is operated by the government. The W.V. Division of Natural Resources solely operates the spa and hot springs resort in West Virginia.
2. Original Lord Fairfax Spring
Part of the hot springs is named after Lord Fairfax, who owned the property back in the 1700s. The first settlers visited the magical springs in 1730, and were taught the uses and value of the springs by the Native Americans. After spreading the word, more settlers came to these natural hot springs in West Virginia.

The springs were often visited by George Washington, who became an influential advocate of the medicinal qualities of the springs after a visit when he was 16, as a member of a survey party. It soon became his favorite spot.

The history continues with the Roman Bath House, featuring 750 gallons of mineral water in a ceramic private walk-in tub. The water can be heated to 102 degrees Fahrenheit, making it one of the best winter getaways in West Virginia. Don't forget to make an appointment.
