This Hidden Waterfall in Washington Is the Perfect Road Trip Detour

Stretch your legs and take the short trail to this breathtaking waterfall. It's a road trip detour for the entire family.

Whenever I venture on a road trip, I love to find those hidden gems — those places that amaze and inspire — even if it is a little out of the way. Near the small community of Brinnon, and just off Highway 101, is a destination that may lead you off your path — Rocky Brook Falls. This Washington waterfall doesn’t take much time to reach, is quite gorgeous, and, in our opinion, a fabulous road trip detour.

Don’t be surprised if Rocky Brook Falls becomes one of your favorite waterfalls in Washington State. This is one of the tallest falls on the Peninsula and is easy to reach. There is a short hike to reach these impressive falls, but it’s family-friendly, takes only a few minutes, and is the perfect destination for stretching your legs on a scenic drive.

To reach these falls, you will find the trailhead near the Rocky Brook Hydroelectric Facility in Brinnon. There is a small parking lot, and the trailhead is directly across the street. You will then have a short hike up to the falls. In total, you will hike just over 0.25 miles, and the trail is well-marked and easy to follow. It also has very little elevation gain for the majority of your journey. It’s perfect for even the youngest of feet. You can also bring Fido on this adventure, but he must be kept on a leash at all times.

Despite being a short journey, it sure is a beautiful one. You will walk through a lush forest and next to a flowing stream. If you time your visit just right, you may even enjoy the falls all on your own, even though this area is a favorite destination for locals.

Not too far into your hike, listen closely as you’ll hear the water tumble down a tall rock wall. Continue your journey and walk up to the base of the falls. Look up — it’s quite a magnificent sight. The waterfall tumbles nearly 200 feet into a small natural pool. If you stop to see this waterfall on a hot summer day, stay for a while and cool off in the water. If you visit after a rainstorm, this waterfall really roars.

A road trip along Highway 101 should be on every bucket list — it’s one of my favorite routes in the country. While the sights you can see from the car are certainly magical, the gems found just a short way off the road are just as spectacular and worth your time. Rocky Brook Falls is a hidden waterfall in Washington worth getting out of your car to see. You won’t regret it.
