Adventure’s Calling: This Trail Is Ideal for Beachcombing in Virginia
A scenic trail leads to a fossil beach at this breathtakingly beautiful Virginia state park.
No matter your age, there's something irresistible about scouring the beach for shells and other treasures. Luckily, we have plenty of coast to enjoy here in Virginia, but if you're looking to take home a unique-looking shell—or perhaps even a prehistoric fossil—we have just the spot for you: York River State Park. A treasure trove of history and natural beauty, this park is a must for nature enthusiasts and those who'd like to dabble in a little paleontology.
To visit York River State Park is to experience a breathtaking and rare estuarine environment, and an important one for both plant and marine life. It's centered around the York River in Williamsburg and has the special designation of being a Chesapeake Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve. It's also quite easy to get to; it's about an hour away from Richmond and two hours from Northern Virginia.
The park is just shy of 3,000 acres and features over 40 miles of hiking, biking, and equestrian trails that allow visitors to witness the beautiful marsh, forest, and riverbank. And one of the most fascinating adventures that the park offers is the chance to uncover shells and even fossils. The Mattaponi Trail to Fossil Beach is a 2.5-mile out-and-back trail that will lead you right to the riverbank, where there's a beach perfect for exploring.
The trail itself is beautifully maintained and well-marked, meaning it's easy to follow. The Mattaponi Trail is named for the Native Americans who have historically lived in King William County, along the tributary of the same name.
Along the beach, you'll spot rugged cliffs that are made up of Miocene-aged and Quaternary sediments, ranging between 25 and 2 million years old. Within these cliffs are embedded prehistoric fossils, and as the cliffs erode, these fossils are washed down to the riverbank and shore. The fossils you'll uncover at Fossil Beach are from dozens of various shellfish and aquatic creatures, most of which were alive about 6,000 years ago.
Each year, the park hosts a series of Fossil Frenzy hikes, where rangers lead hikers to the riverbank to find fossils. Many wonder, is it okay to take home a fossil? The answer: yes! Just be sure to take only one home with you, though, to ensure other visitors get the same opportunity. Some of the fossils you might find include shark teeth, brachiopods, and fossil scallops.
If you'd like to continue your adventure, follow the trail to the Powhatan Overlook, which offers one of the best views of the York River in the park. You can also take the Woodstock Pond Trail to make your hike a complete loop, rather than turning around at the beach.
