The Most Romantic Valentine’s Day Hikes You’ll Find in Tennessee
From waterfalls to sunsets, explore any of these romantic hikes with your Valentine for a unique and beautiful date.
Tennessee hikes offer some of the best scenery in our country. Now I am a bit biased, but I love the mountains of the Volunteer State and happen to think they are perfectly suited for any occasion. So when it comes to Valentine’s Day, why not do something different and skip the dinner reservations this year and instead take to the forest? Here are some unique ways that you can make a hike in Tennessee one of the most romantic and fun dates you’ve had in a while.
1. Rainbow Falls in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park
When I first thought about romantic Tennessee hikes, Rainbow Falls was the first one that came to mind. Part of the reason for this is that I first went on this trail with my wife on our anniversary. So I know firsthand how this adventure can stoke the fires of love. There is no denying the beauty of this massive plunge fall in the Smokies, and that alone is well worth the trip.
The journey is a bit longer through the mountains, and despite it being a popular hike, we had plenty of time on the trail all to ourselves. It was peaceful and quiet as we hiked along the babbling brook and listened to the birds singing. Taking this hike was certainly an adventure I won’t soon forget, and it was made even better as I got to spend some quality alone time with the love of my life.
2. Round Bald on Roan Mountain
Round Bald remains one of my favorite spots in Tennessee and a hike I return to often. I would highly recommend trekking up the mountain to enjoy the fantastic views, but if you want to really spice things up, then head there near the end of the day. Summit the bald with unobstructed views of the mountains that go on as far as your eyes can see. Then find a spot on a rock, or by some trees to sit and watch the sunset. Watch as the blue mountains get highlighted in brilliant hues of the painted sky as the sun sets in the distance. Now that is romantic!
3. Lost Creek Falls in the Lost Creek Falls State Natural Area
I love finding a stunning waterfall, and Lost Creek Falls is definitely a fitting sight to behold, but that is only half the reason this would make a good spot for a date. This area is very remote, and you are likely to have the spot all to yourself. We did when we visited, as we explored the rocks around the waterfall and watched the flowing falls splash against the shallow pool below. If you want some alone time with a beautiful backdrop, then head to Lost Creek Falls.
4. Take a Backpacking Trip to Savage Gulf State Park
For a bit more of an adventurous date, plan to set two whole days aside and schedule a backpacking trip. One of the best places for this would be to head to Savage Gulf State Park to take the Laurel, Greeter Falls, BCR, and Stone Door Loop. This nearly 10-mile trail takes you to some of the best spots in the park, including Greeter Falls and Stone Door. You can break the trip up and camp along the way, and after ogling the sparkling waters of the waterfalls or marveling at the scenic views, you can finish the night cuddling up to a roaring campfire.
5. Elkmont in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park
Elkmont, the famous ghost town of the Smokies, is certainly a fun place to explore, but have you ever been at night? The vacant buildings and the eerie echoes of the past are only enhanced when the sun goes down. It can be a bit spooky, but take the Little River Trail to see the ruins of old mountain cabins from yesteryear. There is something exciting about wandering this path on a dark night when the stars shine overhead, and the only light in the forest is coming from your headlight. A little unconventional, sure, but trust m,e it really is a blast.
Bonus Advice:
Make sure to have some good pickup lines that fit the theme of the area you are exploring. Like if you take your date to The Beauty Spot while you are witnessing the awe-inspiring views, look over and say, “I know this is called the Beauty Spot, but you are the most beautiful thing in this spot.” If you take your valentine to the Tennessee River Gorge, you can just throw in one more good line: “This gorge is pretty, but you, my dear, are gorgeous.” Boom, you are welcome.
Tennessee hikes can serve so many great purposes, from date ideas to adventurous outings. There is no end to the amazing things you can do while exploring the fantastic mountains of the Volunteer State.
