We Love Our National Parks, but This South Dakota Park Is Just as Cool

We all love a national park road trip, but you don’t have to go far to find great outdoor spaces. In Rapid City, South Dakota, you’ll find Skyline Wilderness Area, a 150-acre expanse of undeveloped forest and meadows. Just a mile from the famed Dinosaur Park, the area offers a wide network of trails, along with a few standout hikes and overlooks worth checking out.

One of the most popular routes within Skyline Wilderness Area is the Skyline Wilderness Trail. The nearly two-mile loop is considered moderately difficult, with a mix of dirt paths, rocky sections, and modest elevation gain. Along the way, hikers are treated to sweeping views of Rapid City and the surrounding Black Hills, as well as stretches of pine forest, wildflowers, and open meadows. Wildlife such as mule deer and wild turkeys can sometimes be spotted.

Another well-known trek is the Dinosaur Park Trail near Skyline Wilderness. This roughly two-mile round-trip hike is generally considered moderately challenging and climbs to a scenic overlook above Rapid City. At the top sits Dinosaur Park, a roadside attraction established in 1936, featuring seven life-sized dinosaur sculptures perched along the ridge.

Other highlights within the park include the Stonewall Overlook. As the name suggests, visitors can take in views of the Rapid City area from a preserved stone wall. While no amphitheater was ever completed, terraced notches in the hillside hint at where one was planned in the 1930s as part of a Works Progress Administration project at the amphitheater lookout.

The wilderness area is also a favorite among mountain bikers. The trail system spans about 12 miles and includes a range of routes suited for riding. Some sections feature steeper climbs and faster descents for those looking for more of a challenge, and there’s even a trail designed for e-bike users. While some trails are shared with hikers, there are plenty of dedicated singletrack options to explore.

Because it sits within Rapid City limits, Skyline Wilderness Area is especially convenient for a quick outing. It’s an easy option for a lunch break escape or a relaxed day outdoors during a visit to the area.

If you’d rather take in the scenery without hiking, Skyline Drive runs through the park for about two miles and includes several pull-offs where you can stop for a picnic or simply enjoy the views. The drive is especially popular in the fall, when the surrounding landscape begins to show its seasonal colors.
