This Was The Biggest Surprise I Came Across While Hiking This Incredible Trail in South Dakota
Hike South Dakota's Buzzard's Roost Trail and prepare to be enchanted by wildflowers, forest views, and a sweeping overlook of the Black Hills National Forest.
There’s no doubt that South Dakota has some of the best hiking spots in the country. Whether you’re clambering through Badlands National Park, taking a peek at Mount Rushmore, or venturing underground into Wind Cave National Park, you’re bound to have a good time. Of course, these are the well-known spots, the ones that everyone visits, but what about the hidden gems? The unforgettable trails that don’t get the spotlight that they deserve? Here’s one of the best.
Buzzard’s Roost trail is 2.8 miles in length and is located within the Black Hills National Forest. It takes a little under 90 minutes to complete and is an easy hike that, depending on the season, you could get all to yourself. With stunning views, a wonder of wildflowers, and multiple routes that you can take, this trail has it all.
I recommend hiking this trail between the months of April and November, as the winter months can make trekking difficult. July is also a great time for flower viewing if you’re a wildflower enthusiast. The first half of the trail is a bit of a steep incline, so bringing a good pair of shoes is a must in my opinion, but the path evens out during the final stretch. One important thing I recommend is downloading the AllTrails map ahead of time. The trail has limited signage along the route, and a wrong turn can change a relaxing hike into a confusing one. Check out the AllTrails app for access to maps, curated hiking lists, and information on trails that are near you.
The Black Hills National Forest spans 1.2 million acres of wooded hills and mountains across southwestern South Dakota and northeastern Wyoming. Its name comes from the Lakota words paha sapa, meaning “hills that are black,” a reference to how the pine-covered hills appear black from a distance. While there are a variety of different trees that thrive within the forest, the ponderosa pine is the predominant species and the one that gives the forest its beautiful dark color.

Let’s be honest, the overlook at Buzzard’s Roost is the star of the show, and it won’t disappoint. With a view overlooking a vast expanse of the Black Hills National Forest, this vantage point is sure to make any challenge along the trail worth the effort. If you’ve brought a picnic lunch, this is a great place to break out the sandwiches and stretch out—just be sure to pick up after yourselves when you’re done.
The Buzzard’s Roost loop is a great medium-length trail for those looking to see the best of the best at The Black Hills. Pack your sunscreen, grab your nature-loving buddy, and set out for some adventure.
