Why Winter Is This South Carolina State Park’s Secret Season

Explore South Carolina's great inland sea during the off season and you'll enjoy peace, quiet, and endless adventures.

Tucked away on the shores of Lake Marion is an unexpected winter destination: Santee State Park. It's one of the most popular warm-weather destinations in South Carolina's Midlands, and for good reason; there are endless opportunities for hiking, camping, and fishing. But during the winter, when the branches are bare and the crowds thin out, the park takes on an almost ethereal element. Come with us as we dive into what makes winter this beloved state park's secret season.

One of my favorite parts about winter in South Carolina is that the foliage never completely disappears. Live oak trees and Spanish moss add a touch of color and texture to an otherwise dreary landscape, softening it a bit. Moreover, the relatively mild temperatures make it possible to go for a brisk walk even in the middle of winter. If you don't mind putting on that extra layer and getting outside, Santee State Park won't disappoint.

The park is made up of 2,500 acres in the heart of Santee Cooper County. During the summer, anglers flock to Lake Marion to cast a line for bass and catfish. Even if you're not into fishing, you won't want to miss a chance to get out on the water, even during the colder months. Santee Boat Rentals provides year-round tours of what's known as South Carolina's inland sea. Even in winter, the lake is teeming with life, and having a guided tour of this wildly scenic area is an experience you won't soon forget. Don't miss the chance to venture to the park's signature attraction, the otherworldly flooded cypress forest.

If you're partial to land, there are over 10 miles worth of hiking and biking trails to enjoy. The most popular is the Santee Trail, a 7.8-mile loop that takes most hikers about two and a half hours to complete. Of course, you don't need to finish the entire circuit to take in the beautiful terrain.

If you'd like more time in the park, consider camping. Cypress View Campground and Lakeshore Campground both come highly recommended and are open year-round. Guests should note that camping reservations must be made for a minimum of two nights.
