We Love Our National Parks, But This South Carolina Park Is Just As Incredible

One of the lesser-visited state parks in South Carolina, you'll love the scenery and solitude at Calhoun Falls State Park.

Congaree National Park, South Carolina’s only national park, is a fascinating and beautiful spot. Known for its old-growth bottomland hardwood forest, it’s a mesmerizing area and truly a front-runner for nature lovers. Of course, there are plenty of South Carolina state parks that also pull their weight in the scenery department, including Calhoun Falls State Park.

This state park may not be the biggest (it's 318 acres) or even the most visited state park in South Carolina (that honor goes to Hunting Island), but it certainly deserves a spot on your bucket list. One of my favorite reasons to visit the smaller parks in South Carolina is fewer crowds. I personally love escaping crowds and finding the lesser-known spots where I feel like I'm the only one for miles.

Calhoun Falls State Park sits on the edge of the South Carolina/Georgia border, right along the shores of Lake Russell. Many visitors come to spend some time camping at the Calhoun Falls Campground, but this enchanting state park in South Carolina is equally worthy of a day trip.

Lake Russell is one of the main highlights of this scenic state park. There is a boat ramp and 36 boat slips available to rent. The freshwater lake is a coveted spot for anglers of all skill sets hoping to catch their daily limits of bass, crappie, bream, walleye, stripers, and catfish. The park store sells firewood, live bait, tackle supplies, and a limited selection of groceries, too. Be sure to have a valid South Carolina fishing license before you cast!

Of course, fishing isn’t the only appeal. There is also a designated swimming area at Calhoun Falls State Park for folks who want to splash the day away. There is no lifeguard on duty, and swimming is at your own risk.

My favorite is the Cedar Bluff Nature Trail. Clocking in at just under two miles, this loop trail is perfect for all ages and takes you on a scenic journey through the woods with plenty of Lakeview spots.

Dogs are welcome at Calhoun Falls State Park, as long as they are on a leash. Feel free to take them with you on the nature trail! Since this state park tends to fly under the radar, there’s a good chance you’ll have the trail all to yourself—yes, please!

The 318-acre state park also boasts plenty of picnic areas, tennis courts, and a playground. The park offers free Wifi in most day-use areas, but it is not available in the campgrounds. Regina’s Savannah Grill is a local eatery nearby, and you can grab some grub ahead of time and eat at one of the picnic areas. They're known for southern comfort food, but their burgers are not to be missed! Plus, they're much easier to transport to the park.

Admission is $3 for adults, $1.50 for South Carolina senior residents, $1 for kids 6-15, and free for kids who are five and younger. Visit the official website for Calhoun Falls State Park to learn more and start planning your trip today.
