If you want the pop of fall colors along with some amazing scenery, Cathedral Park is your picture perfect park to enjoy it all. Situated on the east shore of the Willamette River, Cathedral Park is located directly under the St Johns Bridge, and gets its name from the gothic arches of the bridge, which resemble those found in a cathedral.
The reds of the maple trees changing are amazing and awe-inspiring, even more so with the bridge peering through in the background.
The colors pop from behind the fir trees that make up much of the landscape of the Northwest. Stroll the paved walkways in the park to see a contrasting palette of colors all around you.
The park, which opened in 1980, has become over the years one of the most iconic spots to take photos in Portland because of the photogenic bridge towering above.
The colors are the star of the show here though. Venture to the dock, or relax in the open-air amphitheater to take in the beauty here.
Long before the iconic bridge was built here in 1931, the spot is said to have been a stop on Lewis and Clark's 1806 expedition. And before that, it had been a fishing and hunting site for many Native American tribes.
Today, it is nearly as hard to find a picture that doesn't include the bridge...
As it is to think of the park without it.
After you are done enjoying the park, stroll into the business district of St. Johns and grab a cup of coffee or a bite to eat at one of the many shops and restaurants in the area.
